A routine task inherent in many industrial processes is detecting the edges of round objects accurately enough to be able to measure their dimensions precisely enough for Quality Control purposes.
Problem
The multifarious possibilities of dimension, colour and material are impossible for a single integrated solution to be expected to cope with.
The proper instruments and lighting are required to capture the best results and different techniques in obtaining the most accurate image may be used.
Solution
Backlight: One of the most effective methods for producing high-precision, dimensional detection is to use a backlight. By comparison with direct lighting, a backlight will generate an instant high contrast, sharp silhouette against a bright background enabling perfect edge detection. This type of backlight solution can be achieved by adding a diffuser to an assembly of LED bar lights.
LED Ring (Low Angle or Diffusion Dome): A special case may demand an alternative solution depending on the work-piece’s specifications, in order to measure more than the simple edges, or if the material does not lend itself to being successfully backlit. In such an instance using a LED Ring set in either a Low Angle configuration or within a Diffusion Dome may give the clearest edge detection and/or relief features of the piece.
